Across six model years of NHTSA data, the Jeep Cherokee's complaint history splits cleanly into two eras. From 2016 through 2018, the dominant complaint was a shifter warning light and gear indicator malfunction — an electrical-system problem tied to the transmission's shift logic that generated 503 occurrences in 2016 alone and 583 more in 2017 under the heading "Shifting Issues," making 2017 the single worst year on record with 1,054 total complaint occurrences and four safety-severity problems. Engine misfiring and stalling rode alongside the shifter complaints in both years, and 2018 added a "Vehicle Suddenly Shutting Off" fuel-system complaint to the mix.

Starting in 2019, the story shifts to the Power Transfer Unit, or PTU, which handles power delivery to the four-wheel-drive system. PTU failure was the top-reported problem in 2019 (595 occurrences, safety-severity) and again in 2020, with a "Recall for Power Transfer Unit Not Addressed" complaint showing owners were still waiting on fixes. By 2020 and 2021, total complaint volume dropped sharply to 156 and 144 respectively, with 2021 introducing a forward collision avoidance system malfunction as a newer concern.

Recall coverage is dense throughout this range — 2016 through 2018 carry campaigns including 18V332 and 23V302, while 2019's PTU trouble is tied to a cluster of seven separate recalls including 18V524 and 19V637, and 2020-2021 add 19V637 and 21V310.

For a used buyer, the 2017 and 2019 model years carry the heaviest complaint loads and are worth the most scrutiny on a test drive — listen for shifter warnings and 4WD grinding. Keep in mind these are filed owner reports, not a measured failure rate, and a service history showing the relevant recall work was completed matters more than the model year by itself.
