Davenport Diesel/ RV Repair

I hired them to diagnose and repair my Onan RV generator, which was displaying a Code 14 fault. Before the repair, I explained that I believed the governor had been knocked out of adjustment when I replaced the carburetor. Instead of performing what I later learned was the proper governor preload reset, the technician adjusted the governor speed and governor sensitivity screws. During that process, he lost the retaining clip and washer for the governor speed adjustment screw and never replaced them. The governor sensitivity screw was also left so loose that it wobbled on the adjustment plate. I was initially told the generator was fixed, but it had not been tested under a full electrical load. When I asked about this, the technician said he would test it before leaving. He also told me the retaining clip was missing and that it was too hot to replace it at that time. He returned the next day and told me everything had been checked and that the generator was operating correctly under load. However, when I got home and turned on the generator with the air conditioner, the generator immediately bogged down and stalled as soon as the A/C compressor engaged. After doing my own research and reviewing the Onan service procedures, I performed the governor preload reset myself. The generator now starts and runs, and I’m waiting for a frequency (Hz) meter so I can properly set the governor speed according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The technician seemed like an honest person, and I don’t believe he intentionally misled me. However, I paid $380 for a repair that was not completed correctly. Parts were lost and not replaced, and the generator was apparently not properly verified under the load it was designed to operate. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this company for diagnosing or repairing an Onan generator. I can’t speak to the quality of their other services, and one of the reasons I chose them was because of their excellent five-star reviews. Unfortunately, my experience did not reflect those ratings.

Five stars are not enough to rate just how wonderful Dion is at his job. Following an issue with our Marathon Coach, Dion offered amazing advise when working on our engine and when he felt that the previous shop failed to look at another possible issue, Dion waited while we moved the coach from Grand Prairie to his site just so he could look at the other issue. He was correct about the additional issue and rather than tell us to come back later, he fixed it on the spot so we didn’t have to make a return trip. He also offered to help better understand the inner workings of the coach with additional coach training and offering to answer our calls when we needed urgent help. And he had never failed to answer his phone and every time he has the answer we have needed to fix each issue.

Dion did a great job with the diagnostics and repair of our Onan generator. We had lots of unusual electrical symptoms but Dion did NOT throw parts at it like some shops. He kept working until he found the problem and fixed the problem. He has great work ethics and we highly recommend his services.
