Car Overheating
An engine that runs hot is one of the fastest ways to cause expensive damage. If the temperature gauge is climbing, treat it seriously.
Should you keep driving?
Continuing to drive an overheating engine can warp the head or blow a head gasket. Pull over safely and let it cool.
Common causes
Low coolant / leakThe most common cause. A leak at a hose, radiator, or water pump drops the level.
Stuck thermostatA thermostat stuck closed blocks coolant flow and spikes the temperature.
Failing water pumpIf it stops circulating coolant, the engine overheats even with a full system.
Bad radiator fanAt low speed and idle the fan does the cooling — a dead fan overheats in traffic.
