System Too Rich at Idle Bank 1

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected that the air-fuel mixture is too rich (too much fuel or not enough air) specifically when the engine is idling on Bank 1. This code is set when the short-term and long-term fuel trims exceed their negative thresholds during idle conditions in an attempt to compensate for the rich condition.

How urgent is P2188?

While the vehicle will usually still drive, running too rich for an extended period can damage the catalytic converter and foul spark plugs. It should be diagnosed and repaired soon to prevent secondary component failure and poor fuel economy.
