Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit

The P0100 code indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a general malfunction in the Mass Air Flow (MAF) or Volume Air Flow (VAF) sensor circuit. The engine computer sets this code when the voltage or frequency signal from the sensor falls outside the expected normal operating range.

How urgent is P0100?

While the vehicle can usually still be driven, a faulty MAF circuit disrupts the air-fuel ratio. This should be diagnosed soon to prevent poor drivability, increased emissions, and potential long-term damage to the catalytic converter.

Look for: Listen for hissing sounds or use a smoke machine to find unmetered air entering the engine between the MAF sensor and the throttle body.

Look for: Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V or 12V depending on the system) and has a solid ground with less than 0.1 volts of drop.

Monitor the MAF sensor signal output using a scan tool.

Look for: Observe the MAF data PID while idling and accelerating; the value should increase smoothly with engine RPM. A static, erratic, or out-of-range reading indicates a faulty sensor or signal wire.
