Charlie's Garage

So there I was, driving my mom's car, headed to Marblehead for some Vitamin Sea when the car was very reluctant to accelerate from a stop light. Not long after that, the smell of hot rubber started coming out of the vents, and I turned around, trying to make it back to her usual mechanic. I was still four miles out when smoke started coming from the left front wheel, and I pulled over immediately and started searching for towing companies... when I saw Charlie's Garage right across the street. And let me tell you, that is the luckiest thing that's happened to me in a long time. Charlie's was fully booked that day, but still was able to fit me in. They quickly and accurately diagnosed the problem, had parts ordered within half an hour and the car fixed (full front brake job) in less than four. They even loaned me a phone charger to use while I waited. Through all this, they were a joy to work with; they didn't automatically assume I was an idiot about cars just because I'm an older woman (I'm actually an engineer, but they couldn't have known that), explained their diagnostic process and the nature of the problem in clear non-gearhead language, offered less expensive alternatives while explaining the pros and cons, and didn't upsell any services or "coincidentally" find other things wrong with the car. And the final bill, considering everything they did, was more than reasonable. I've worked with many mechanics in my life, but don't think I've ever encountered one before that was friendly, respectful, accommodating, honest, skilled, AND reasonably priced. This was my favorite car repair experience to date - not that it's ever fun, but they made it suck so much less. I can't recommend Charlie's Garage more highly, and my mom is now reconsidering who she wants as her go-to mechanic.

They are super kind, transparent, reasonably priced, and very accommodating. I took my 10 year old car in for a 24 point inspection after a few concerning signs and sounds popped up, and now it drives like when I first got it. They're very honest and detailed in their findings, and will let you know about all of your options in terms of safety and price. After hours drop off and pick up are very convenient options they offer to help work around your schedule if needed. This shop was suggested by my mother in law, and my wife and I now go here for any of our car issues, and they have never let us down. An auto shop this trustworthy is a real gem—so glad to have them nearby. Praise the Lawd!

Honest, knowledgeable, and friendly Charlie's Garage employees are straightforward and quick. I've been going here for several different cars over years and years and I won't go anywhere else for my repairs. This is hands-down the best and greatest mechanic in the Salem area. They won't lie and they won't take your money needlessly. Always helpful and communicate very well. Don't risk going anywhere else.

They took the time to properly diagnose the issue my car was having, and were clear in explaining what was wrong and my options for repair. Their price was very fair, and they finished the job for exactly the amount quoted. They got everything done within one day.

On a roadtrip from West Tennessee to Maine my van started missing on cylinder 3 in the Bronx, NY. We pulled off and got the parts but kept limping north. I stopped in a Bill’s first when we got to Salem but he pointed me to Charlie’s Garage for the fix. They were swamped but Dave took the time to walk me through the repair right there in the parking lot. He was super knowledgeable, really knew his stuff and got the job done right & quickly. Price was super fair and Dave also had some great recommendations for local food spots for me and the family. If Charlie’s wasn’t 1,069 miles away they would be my go to shop for all my mechanic needs. I can’t recommend these guys enough. Thanks again for helping us out in a tight spot.
