Cookson's Transmission City

I have used Cookson's for over 20 years to rebuild manual transmissions for our shop on a sublet basis. They are always quick, reasonably priced, and very thorough in their repairs. I wish all vendors we deal with were as professional and trustworthy as Cookson's.

Important UPDATE at bottom They are well qualified experienced transmission mechanics. I was given a base price and a maximum cost. I knew all along I needed more than just the basic beginning price service. After they inspected my transmission they called and gave me an exact price that was well under the maximum cost. My van was ready in two days and the cost was exactly what they told me it was going to be. That was about 3 months ago. I drive my van every day. I waited that long before my review to give it more credibility. My transmission works exactly like it is supposed to. I was easy on it for the first week. Since then I don't drive it like I stole it but I'm not easy on it. I drive it like I drove it for the first 250,000 miles when it was new. This time however I'm going to service the transmission a little more responsibly instead of neglecting it like I did before. If you're looking for a good transmission shop there are none better than Cookson in Duncanville, Texas. UPDATE: It's been 2 years & 50,000 miles since I posted the above review and I'm still Rockin' and Rollin' down the road with my Cookson-Rebuilt transmission!

Preface to the review: RUDE WORKERS, NEGLIGENT, SLOWER THAN MY GREAT GRANDMOTHERS' TYPING ABILITIES. OVERPRICED. MAGICALLY FIND NEW ISSUES WRONG WITH YOUR CAR. This place is terrible. I wouldn't recommend this place to Satan if his car broke down, that's how much I absolutely despise this place. I literally have no idea how a business like this has lasted for so long. To START the complaint, the main guy Tommy has a habit of interrupting you while you speak. I'm confident he finds great joy in interrupting you. We've taken my car here for this one single transmission fix a total of five times over a span of a month and a half. I haven't been able to work or go to the grocery store or even take my kids to the park because of the month and a half this has been going on, Cookson's has had the car for over three weeks to fix a transmission. I got a quote from another shop, and it was going to take them four days. The last major issue I have with this place is of ALL that time they had my car, they somehow managed to miss two of my four car mounts were completely broken. Luckily, another mechanic noticed it right away. I told Tommy by his mechanics negligence, my kids and I could have been severely hurt. I brought up the other shop said my engine could fall out, and instead of apologizing that they missed this mistake and put the lives of my kids in danger, he had the audacity to skip over that and say the other shop was overeating. This man and shop have no care for actually repairing cars and maintaining safety standards, they just want your money, and a good bit more than what it should actually cost.

I had a bad experience here. Took my car to them because it had transmission problems. Was told they'd look at it and get back to me that same day. Didn't hear anything until I called the next day. Then over the phone they told me it would cost $1,200 dollars to fix my car. A few days later they call me and start listing a bunch of extra problems and stuff they had to "fix". They said it would cost $4,500 dollars at this point. I had taken it to another mechanic previously and I knew all the stuff they were saying was extra. Long story short they gave me one price and then once they had taken the transmission out of my car and pulled it apart they give me a price that's almost 4× more than the original quote. I don't expect stuff to be done for free and I understand quotes don't always match up. But to go from $1,200 to $4,500 is ridiculous. In the end I had to get my car towed and was charged $600 for "labor".

If I can save one person from suffering the agony of this place mission accomplished. THEY ARE CROOKS DEALING WITH THIS PLACE WAS A VERY BAD DECISION. I was told by Tommy that I would be charged $600 to rebuild and install my 2speed Power Glide old GM transmission. After I left my car I received a call from Tommy stating that it would be $1700 to repair my car. (More than the cost of a new high performance 2speed power glide) When I complained he told me I can come pick it up in pieces and I owed him $500. Reluctantly I agreed to let them work on my car. Less than 2500 miles later my transmission went out car wouldn’t move. They won’t fix it. CROOKS
