Then 2020 and 2021 settle into a single dominant complaint — engine coolant bypass valve failure, with 55 occurrences in 2020 and 32 in 2021 — alongside a return of passenger airbag defect reports in 2021 (26, safety-rated).

Taken together, a used Corolla buyer's real diligence items are airbag recall completion on anything from the early 2010s, and a coolant bypass valve check on anything 2019 or newer. None of this makes the Corolla an outlier for its class, and it's worth remembering that these are owner-filed reports rather than a measured defect rate — newer model years simply haven't had as long to accumulate complaints, so a pre-purchase inspection and full service history remain the best evidence regardless of year.
