Few used cars in this comparison carry a complaint history as lopsided as the Hyundai Sonata's oldest tracked year. The 2011 model logged 1,222 complaints — a genuinely enormous total — with engine lock-up on the highway alone accounting for 651 reports and rated safety-critical, followed by steering pulling to the left at 352 reports, also safety-flagged. A smaller cluster of engine seizure (40 reports, safety-rated), misfire and hesitation (35 reports), and knocking (24 reports) rounds out a year where two problems, engine lock-up and steering pull, together explain the overwhelming bulk of the complaint volume. Five separate recall campaigns touch this model year: 10V426, 10V457, 15V568, 16V190, and 18V934.

Oil consumption becomes the dominant theme from 2015 through 2018. The 2015 model (398 complaints, 6 safety-rated, recalls 14V325, 14V368, 15V678) is led by engine failure during operation at 238 reports, with a hybrid-system warning during acceleration adding 48 more. In 2016 (456 complaints, recall 15V678), plain oil consumption tops the list at 180 reports, joined by stalling and loss of power rated safety-critical at 156. Steering returns as a major concern in 2017 (480 complaints, 7 safety-rated, no recalls on file): power steering failure draws 169 reports and steering lock-up another 126, both safety-flagged, even as oil consumption and knocking continue in the background at 63 and 55 reports respectively. By 2018 (263 complaints), the picture narrows back to oil-related engine failure, misfires, and low oil warnings.

The most recent years look comparatively cleaner. The 2019 model drops to just 72 complaints with none rated safety-critical, still led by excessive oil consumption (37 reports) but at a much smaller scale. The 2020 model (76 complaints, recalls 20V122, 20V213, 25V796) introduces a different concern entirely — fuel tank expansion causing the rear seat to lift, cited 22 times and paired with broader fuel system damage complaints (14 reports).

Given how concentrated the 2011 and 2017 model years are around engine lock-up and steering failure specifically, those years call for particular caution and a hands-on steering and drivetrain check. It's worth remembering throughout that these are owner-filed reports rather than a measured defect rate, and that newer years have simply had less time to accumulate them — a pre-purchase inspection and full service history matter more than the year on the title.
