Two very different defects define the GMC Acadia's history in this data, arriving in two distinct eras. 2015 and 2016 are dominated by airbag recall complications — 29 reports in 2015 describing airbag recall issues generally and 41 in 2016 specifically describing delayed repairs, with another 12 reports that year citing unavailable replacement parts. Steering also shows up in both years, with steering noise and whining in 2015 (7 reports) and outright steering pump failure causing loss of power steering at low speed in 2016 (7 reports); 2016 additionally logs two safety-rated problems against a total of 82 occurrences.

Then, starting in 2017, an entirely different and far larger problem takes over: the vehicle failing to properly recognize that it's in Park. 2017 is the worst year by a wide margin — 473 total occurrences across just 8 problems, six of them safety-rated — led by 189 reports of a shift-to-park issue and 86 of transmission shift lever malfunction, both safety-severity, plus 50 more reports of a shift-to-park warning appearing even while parked and 46 describing headlight problems in poor visibility. Recall 16V802 applies to this year. 2018 carries the same defect forward at similar volume, 396 occurrences, with 135 reports of an intermittent shift-to-park message and 110 describing the vehicle failing to recognize Park and not shutting off, alongside continuing gear shifter malfunction reports. By 2019, volume eases to 313 occurrences with no safety-rated problems, though the shift-to-park warning persists at 119 reports, joined by battery drain issues and steering assist malfunction; recall 20V668 is on file.

Given how the same shift-to-park defect runs through three straight years, that's the single most important thing to test on any 2017–2019 Acadia: confirm the vehicle reliably registers Park and shuts off normally, repeatedly, before buying. Earlier 2015–2016 examples warrant a check that any airbag recall was actually completed, not just scheduled.
