Transmission trouble carries straight through the Ford Focus RS record. 2016 is the peak year at 691 reported occurrences, and more than half trace to one safety-rated complaint: transmission shifting issues and slippage, at 379 reports, with shuddering and slipping adding 128 and transmission control module failure another 22. 2017 follows at 529 occurrences with the same profile — slipping during acceleration (162, safety-rated), shuddering and jerking during acceleration (149), and transmission clutch failure (38). Seventy-one owners reported engine stall at idle attributed to purge valve failure — a specific, diagnosable complaint — and 48 reported steering assist cutting out intermittently, which matters more than its count suggests because losing assist mid-corner is a control issue. Ten further reports blame stalls on the stop-start system, and fuel system vacuum complaints appear back in 2016.

Evaluate accordingly. The test drive should stress the transmission the way these complaints describe it failing: takeup from a stop, hard acceleration, repeated shifts — feel for shudder, slip, or hesitation. On a 2018, let the car idle long enough to catch a stall and pay attention to steering feel throughout. Documentation of clutch, clutch pack, or control module work is worth asking for explicitly, since repeat repairs are how this pattern often plays out.

The usual proportion applies: these are complaints owners filed with NHTSA, not measured failure rates, and the declining totals into 2018 partly reflect less time on the road. Buy the specific car — its service file and a pre-purchase inspection — rather than the model year.
