Ford Focus Bev
Problems & Worst Years
Every reported problem for the Ford Focus Bev, model year by model year — ranked from 1614 federal NHTSA complaints across 2015–2018.
Complaints filed on the Ford Focus BEV run heavily to the drivetrain, and the worst year is 2016: 710 reported occurrences, nearly half of them a single safety-rated problem — transmission slipping, at 340 reports — with clutch shuddering and jerking adding 183 more. 2015 is close behind at 601 occurrences, split between check-engine lights for unresolved issues (190), safety-rated clutch assembly failure (160), and transmission shudder and jerking (96). 2017 continues the pattern at 557, topped by transmission slipping and misshifting (170) plus more than 250 combined shuddering and slipping reports.
2018 is the smallest file at 471 but the most fragmented — 65 distinct problems, four at safety severity, with no single complaint above 29 reports. Its flavor shifts toward heat and fuel: engine overheating with loss of power (22), further overheating reports (22), stalls at idle attributed to fuel system failure (21), and evaporative-emissions check-engine lights (24), alongside the familiar transmission shudder.
Two threads deserve emphasis. First, the clutch and slipping complaints across 2015–2017 describe the same failure at enormous volume — this is the core risk in these cars, and any purchase should hinge on how the car takes up drive from a stop and behaves under acceleration. Second, the recurring check-engine-light reports, including 190 explicitly described as unresolved in 2015, argue for a code scan before you negotiate, not after.
Ask for documentation of clutch or transmission repairs; on cars like these, prior warranty work is a feature. And read the totals for what they are — complaints owners filed with NHTSA, not measured failure rates, with later model years having had less time to accumulate reports. Whatever the year, a pre-purchase inspection focused on the drivetrain and a complete service history will do more to protect you than the year-over-year comparison will.
