Bear in mind that these figures are complaints owners filed with NHTSA rather than measured failure rates, and trucks this new have had comparatively little time to accumulate reports — the file on both years is still being written. That's an argument for diligence, not alarm: a pre-purchase inspection that specifically covers the rear axle, a test drive long enough to judge transmission behavior, and the individual truck's service history will matter far more than choosing 2021 over 2022.
