Ford Escape
Problems & Worst Years
Every reported problem for the Ford Escape, model year by model year — ranked from 3792 federal NHTSA complaints across 2015–2022.
Two problems define the Ford Escape's complaint record, and they belong to different halves of the file. The first is coolant getting into the engine. On the 2017 — the single worst concentration in this dataset — one entry, coolant intrusion into the engine, accounts for 1,033 of the year's 1,220 total occurrences and carries safety severity. The 2018 runs it close with 1,233 total occurrences spread across 55 problems, again led by coolant intrusion (441) plus overheating and misfire complaints, and the 2019 continues the pattern at lower volume, with 105 intrusion occurrences in a 352-occurrence year. Campaign 26V011 appears on every year from 2015 through 2019, alongside others including 22V413 and 18V104.
The second signature belongs to the later years: doors. The 2020's file — 761 occurrences — is dominated by driver's side door hinge failure (450), door weld failure (99), and door malfunction (78), and the 2021 repeats the weld complaints at smaller scale, including a safety-severity door check arm weld failure. These years also carry the longest recall lists in the model's data — the 2020 shows fourteen campaigns, among them 20V550, 20V635, 22V331, 22V484, and 24V954 — so verifying completed work is not optional homework here.
Earlier years have their own flavor: the 2015 and 2016 files are heavy with backup and rearview camera failures and complaints about recall repairs being unavailable — 202 occurrences on the 2016 alone — while the 2022, lightest in the set at 74 occurrences, leads with a safety-severity fuel injector defect (15 reports) and transmission shift issues.
Across eight years, totals range from 1,233 down to 74, and the trend clearly favors the newest cars in this data. The usual honesty applies: these are owner-filed NHTSA complaints rather than measured failure rates, and recent years have had less time to accumulate reports. For 2017–2019 cars especially, a cooling-system-focused engine inspection is essential; for 2020–2021, operate every door repeatedly; for all of them, service history and a pre-purchase inspection outweigh the model year.
