Ford Edge
Problems & Worst Years
Every reported problem for the Ford Edge, model year by model year — ranked from 3121 federal NHTSA complaints across 2010–2021.
Nine model years of Ford Edge data break into three distinct eras, each with its own failure signature. The oldest is the worst: the 2011 logged 1,102 total complaint occurrences across 48 problems, eleven of them safety-severity — the heaviest file here — led by door latch sensor malfunctions (175 occurrences) and a cluster of door-ajar warning complaints, plus 64 reports of the brake pedal going to the floor without warning. Recall 11V128 attaches to that year. The 2010 adds brake booster failure (93 occurrences) and, tellingly, 160 reports of recall parts being unavailable, with campaign 15V712 on its books.
The middle years belong to coolant. Complaints of coolant intruding into engine cylinders dominate 2016 through 2018 — 224 occurrences on the 2016, a striking 410 on the 2017 (that year's total: 708, with five safety-severity problems), and 257 on the 2018 — accompanied by misfire, overheating, and engine-failure reports. Campaigns on those years include 16V733, 17V427, 18V390, 18V548, 20V469, 22V413, and 25V544. The 2015 sits apart, led by panoramic sunroof cracking (130 occurrences) and power loss on the highway (109).
From 2019 the story becomes the transmission: torque converter failure leads that year at 175 occurrences with heavy shuddering and jerking complaints behind it, and the 2020 continues with transmission slipping (95) plus safety-severity slipping at highway speeds; both carry recall 20V550. The 2021, at just 45 total occurrences, is the quietest year in the set by a wide margin, though its short list still features transmission delayed engagement and shuddering.
Choosing among Edges on this data alone, the 2011 and the 2016–2018 coolant years demand the most scrutiny, and the 2021 looks comparatively clean. Remember what the numbers are: owner-filed NHTSA complaints, not measured failure rates, with newer years having had less time to accumulate them. A coolant-focused engine inspection on the middle years, a transmission-focused drive on the later ones, and full service records matter more than any year label.
