The numbers on the 2015 Chrysler 200 are hard to ignore: 975 complaint occurrences across 37 problems, and the two largest are both electrical and both safety-severity. Owners filed 435 reports of electrical system issues causing random shutdowns and another 326 describing the vehicle accelerating independently without warning — together, more than three-quarters of the year's entire complaint volume describes the car doing something the driver didn't ask for. Engine stalling while driving adds 40 more, with airbag system malfunctions and transmission issues at lower counts. The 2016 improves substantially on volume — 282 occurrences — but spreads across 35 problems, five of them safety-severity. Engine stalling during driving leads at 38 reports, and the airbag system becomes the recurring theme: airbag system malfunctions appear twice in the top five (30 and 16 reports, both safety-severity), with airbag harness issues adding 13 more. Transmission complaints continue at 16. Recalls 16V589 and 18V332 apply.
For a buyer, the electrical history is the whole ballgame on a 2015. Ask directly whether the car has ever shut down or surged unexpectedly, check service records for electrical diagnosis or repair, and treat any unexplained stall on the test drive as disqualifying until proven otherwise. On either year, confirm through NHTSA's VIN lookup that every recall campaign — and there are many — shows as completed, and watch for airbag warning lights on a 2016.
Context still matters. High complaint counts show what owners reported to NHTSA, not a per-car failure rate; a widely publicized problem tends to draw filings, and the 2016 has also had a year less to accumulate them. Some of these cars had the underlying issues addressed under recall long ago — which is exactly why a pre-purchase inspection and a documented service history are worth more here than the model-year totals. They tell you whether this particular car is one of the fixed ones.
