The Chevrolet Malibu's complaint history splits into two distinct problem eras, with 2010 standing alone as the heaviest file of all. That year logged 692 total complaint occurrences across a sprawling 46 problems, eight at safety severity — led by power steering failure (141 reports at safety severity, plus 36 more for intermittent assist loss), brake light malfunctions (90, also safety severity), and electronic stability control issues (55). Three recall campaigns apply to 2010: 12V460, 14E044, and 14V252. Any 2010 candidate should have all three verifiably closed and get a hard steering-and-lights check besides.

The mid-decade cars trade steering complaints for power-loss electronics. The 2016 year totals 555 occurrences, 333 of them a single issue: engine power reduction while driving; oddly, its second entry — the radio not working — carries 107 reports logged at safety severity. Campaigns 16V084 and 16V502 cover 2016 (16V502 also touches 2015). The 2017 file (450 occurrences) is more of the same: power reduction during driving at 252 safety-severity reports, plus 159 pairing a check engine light with a reduced-power warning. And 2018 (553 occurrences) shifts to stability and speed control — electronic stability control malfunctions lead at 226 safety-severity reports, vehicle speed control failure adds 165, and stalling or random shutdowns another 65. Recalls 19V642 and 20V668 apply there. The 2015 year is comparatively light at 124 occurrences, its top items being airbag system malfunctions.

After 2018, volumes fall away: 155 occurrences for 2019 (battery drain, shift-to-park errors, brake booster vacuum pump failures), 87 for 2020 (shift-to-park messages while already parked, stop-start stalls), and 61 for 2022, where power reduction from turbocharger failure (31) and shift-to-park faults (21) make up most of the file.

Those later years look cleaner, but read the numbers for what they are: owner-filed NHTSA complaints, not measured failure rates, with newer cars having had less time to accumulate reports. Whatever the year, a pre-purchase inspection and legible service history outweigh the model-year reputation.
