The 2019's 136 occurrences lead with charging issues (39 reports) and include battery recall complaints (20) plus safety-severity reports that software updates meant to address battery problems were incomplete or ineffective (18). Its second-biggest mechanical item is unrelated to the battery: steering rack failure, with 24 high-severity reports, alongside 16 complaints about the forward collision avoidance system. The 2020's file is larger — 198 occurrences across nineteen problems — and reads almost entirely as the aftermath of battery recall work. Five separate clusters of 21 reports each describe severe range reduction under recall-related restrictions, charging limits that curtailed the car's usefulness, repairs owners found unreliable, repairs not completed within a reasonable timeframe, and safety concerns that persisted after the work was done. For a buyer, the practical conclusion is the same either way: the value of a used Bolt EV in this data hinges on its recall paper trail. Insist on dealer documentation showing which battery campaigns were performed and when, and have a dealer run the VIN for anything still open — including the newer campaigns on the 2020. On the 2019 specifically, add the steering to your checklist: a pre-purchase inspection should evaluate the steering rack, and any stiffness or noise on a test drive deserves diagnosis, not hope.

A car with completed campaigns, verified charging behavior, and sound steering looks much better than these totals imply. Complaint counts reflect what owners filed with NHTSA during a frustrating stretch, not a measured failure rate, and newer examples have had less time to accumulate reports besides.
