Four model years of BMW X3 appear in this data, and the pattern shifts meaningfully between them. The 2017 posts the highest complaint total at 78 occurrences across thirteen problems, with three rated at safety severity; the 2019 is close behind at 70 with four safety-severity problems — the most of any year here. The 2020 is the comparative bright spot at 40 total complaints and no safety-severity issues, while the 2021 sits in between at 60.

On the 2017, the leading mechanical complaints are engine stalling at idle (13 reports), engine coolant pump failure (10), fuel pump malfunction (9), and general electrical-system trouble (10); another 14 reports concern delayed recall repairs. This year also carries the longest recall sheet in the file — campaigns 18V755, 21V586, 21V907, and 24V608 — so verify completion by VIN before buying.

The 2019's profile is stranger. Its top complaint, at 19 reports and safety severity, is a tailgate that opens on its own while parked or driving. Coolant leaks with overheating (11 reports), emergency call system malfunctions (8), engine mount failures (6, also safety-rated), and water getting into the telematics control unit (5) fill out the list. Recalls 18V453 and 20V152 apply.

Later years trade those issues for sunroof and electrical complaints. The 2020's file includes an electrical system failure tied to recall 25V636 (11 reports), engine oil pump failures (7), exploding sunroof glass (7), and rear differential bolt failures (5). The 2021 leads with sunroof failures and glass explosions (19 combined reports), stalling at idle blamed on the stop-start system (11), and complete electrical shutdowns (7); campaigns 25V636 and 26V056 are open items to check on that year.

Across all four years, the recurring themes are cooling, electrical faults, and — in 2020 and 2021 — sunroof glass. None of this is condemnation: these are the most-reported issues, drawn from what owners filed with NHTSA rather than measured failure rates, and the newer years have simply had less time to accumulate reports. Whatever the year, a pre-purchase inspection covering the cooling system and sunroof, a VIN recall check, and documented service history will matter more than choosing 2020 over 2017 on the numbers alone.
