Notably, 2018 carries two safety-severity problems to 2017's one, so the smaller year isn't automatically the cleaner one in kind, even if it is in count.

Recall coverage tilts heavily toward 2017, which is tied to campaigns 16V642, 16V648, 19V035, and 20V149; the 2018 year shows only 19V035. Run the VIN on any candidate and confirm all applicable campaigns are closed.

For a test drive and inspection: cycle every exterior light and watch the dash for spurious warnings, listen for misfire at idle and under load, ask for oil consumption history between changes, and have the springs inspected on a lift — a broken coil can hide until someone looks. Then weigh the statistics for what they are. Complaint counts reflect what owners filed with NHTSA, not measured failure rates, and the later year has had less time to accumulate reports. The condition of the specific Q7 — verified by inspection and service records — matters more than which of these two years it happens to be.
