Bryan's Garage

My wife went to Bryan's Garage for an oil change before our summer trip this past year. She has a 2012 Rav4 that burns oil, an endemic problem to that model. Mechanics generally agree that little can be done aside from rebuilding the engine with new piston gaskets (just search YouTube for "2012 toyota rav4 burning oil"). Nonetheless, some mechanics periodically propose expensive repairs that they claim "might reduce the oil consumption". When probed as to the probability of any repair short of rebuilding eliminating the oil burn completely, they immediately admit that it may somewhat reduce, but will very likely not eliminate the oil burn. Unfortunately, I was away in Europe during this oil change when Bryan's Garage recommended a $500+ repair that *might* reduce the oil consumption. The garage was optimistic about the repair's success and my wife did not think to question them as to the exact probability of the repair succeeding, given the long history of this model. As we were going on a long road trip, she opted for the repair. During our road trip, the oil consumption was, if anything, higher than before the expensive repair. My wife explained that she had had it repaired prior to the trip and was deeply disappointed. When I looked at the documentation, it wasn't even consistent as to the type of oil that had been used for the oil change (see attached photo), leaving us in a quandary as to which oil to use for topping up. As both types of oil are valid for our engine, it wasn't the end of the world, but rather unprofessional. This reduced a 3-star review to a 2-star. The reason for not leaving a single star review is that when I called, the receptionist was very kind and took great pains to explain that they surely didn't *promise* my wife that the repairs would resolve the oil burn. I don't doubt the veracity of her statement, but my wife picked up on the optimism at the time, not skepticism. When I asked my wife whether she would have done the repair had they clearly stated that it was highly improbable that the repair would eliminate the oil burn, given the age and fundamental, universal engine defects of this model, she said that she would ABSOLUTELY have refused the repair. While I can appreciate that mechanics want to be helpful, it would be more helpful to give a realistic estimate of success when offering to do repairs, especially for people who don't understand cars.

Super friendly auto shop. Barb is very welcoming over the phone and was able to get my car in on the same day when I had an emergency. Within a few hours, the issue was diagnosed and I was given a reasonable quote. They had my car back to me and fully running by 5pm. Brenton even took the time to show me what had gone wrong and showed me the car parts that had broken down. I won’t go anywhere else!

We love Bryan's Garage and have been clients for 10+ years. They are absolutely amazing. They will tell you when something isn't needed yet, but to be aware. Great quality. Their whole team is personable and helpful. For emissions testing they will even fix it and get it tested for you to make sure it passes.

I live down the street and had locked my keys, phone, and purse in my car during the recent cold snap. Yikes! I walked over to Bryan's garage to see if they could have someone come and open the car door, and Barb went above and beyond to locate a service that could come and help me - her crew was swamped with work as you could imagine in that weather. I just want to give a big thumbs up and a huge thank you to Barb and Bryan's garage, they didn't have to help locate a third party to come and help, but they did, and that's true service!
